Are there SEO tactics in our program (or not) that are specific to any of the primary engines? If so, please elaborate.

We focus on Google, reasons illustrated here!

Specifically, we monitor and exploit methods that can be shown currently to demonstrate benficial results in Google.

In general, we never do anything that will hurt rankings in other engines and we employ tactics that generally support a beneficial user experience, which is the appropriate philosophy for providing effective SEO services.

Google: You (Auto)Complete Me

Yesterday Google launched a major update to their search engine that might have a far-reaching effect on online marketing. Now, instead of delivering results after the user has finished typing in keywords, Google dynamically updates the results page while the user is typing. While it’s possible to turn the option off and go back to the old search style, the new Google Instant is the default option for internet search.

The search is performed at a breakneck speed – when this writer tried it out, it was almost disconcerting to see the results page roiling and changing with every keystroke.

Google Instant is not yet present on cell phones; likewise, it won’t affect searches performed from browser toolbar boxes, like the ones included in Firefox and Opera. Meanwhile, the Internet is scrambling to find out just what this will mean for online marketing. What do you think? Let us know!

Social Media Tips and Links

People may have trouble justifying their work with social media purely from a traffic basis.

However, the greatest benefit, besides brand building and of course sales, is in great relevant, timely links often from a great number of sources.

With that in mind here are 3 tips to help guide your work.

  1. Always make sure that what you publish is a permanent URL. This means that links to your post or items within your post provide a lasting benefit.
  2. Use software and plugins that automatically distribute your content on the networks the provide linkbacks (twitter, digg, reddit, facebook)
  3. Make sure that your content provides a balance of personal and business information. It is this balance that makes your social media persona interesting and attractive!

Google Everything Alerts Tip

I mainly use Google alerts for Link alerts, to see when Google “publicly” acknowledges that they have discovered a link to a specific domain or URL. I also use web alerts to find instances of content mentioned certain phrases.

Google has now announced that they are re-naming these. So now web alerts will be everything alerts, and most likely we won’t experience any significant change in our usage and benefits from this free service.

I do think it is notable that this follows the changes to their SERPs, the pages on which valuable keyword placed results are displayed to potential customers. As SERPs become more varied, displaying “everything” results (video, blog comments, items from gmail connected users) this has got expose in greater detail the way that they connect all this recorded content together around it’s keywords, and fence off what is “of interest” for you, as the creater of the everything alert.

And what really kills me is they were boneheaded enough to publish all of our email addresses in the CC field. That’s just plain rude.

It’s always helpful to have more information about your domain and keywords but here are some general things you can do:

1) Make sure your home page title tag has your major keyword and regions of influence. So if you have a shoe store, you might have your title tag be:
Kids Shoes Tampa FL | Bridal shoe packages in Florida

Try and draw out a niche for yourself and try and get the best ranking you can for these more specific phrases. It’s far easier to gain a ranking for so called “long tail” search terms that specify your region.

2) Improve your link popularity, which means to get more links pointed to your homepage. Links are perhaps the most important measure of whether your website deserves a first page ranking in Google. Some methods to do this are:
a) Exchange links with other business websites in your area
b) Find stories on blogs related to your industry and comment on them, making sure you take advantage of the [Website] field when placing your comment.
c) Setup a twitter account and make posts/tweets about inner pages on your website with a link to the page.

If you spend 1-2 hours per day doing the above, you’ll see your rankings start to rise after 3 weeks and continue to as long as you remain diligent in your new, free SEO ranking improvement habits!
