Media companies rise to the S&P 500
Netflix and Cablevision are taking seats at the table of the influential S&P 500, one of the standards by which we (macro) measure American progress in general and day-to-day transactional news.
To free these seats, the following companies are being asked to quietly pick up their chips and move to a less infamous table.
- Office Depot Inc
- New York Times Co
- Eastman Kodak Co
Newspapers giving way to cable distribution, no surprise given people have shown a definite preference for entertainment-news rather than traditional journalism.
And Netflix, one of my own darlings, taking the seat from an office supply chain that, I guess, can’t match Quill and Staples.
Or is Staples not long for the S&P either…
Doing good should always be recognized
When kids want to be musicians, they might dream of adoring fans, incredible talent to move crowds of thousands or even the rowdy lifestyle of a rock band or hip-hop group.
(note: Links above contain images of rock not suitable for those who have recently had heart surgery or whose children are watching.)
But I want to recognize the band Jars of Clay for reaching their goal to bring clean water to 1,000 African villages.
Doing good should always be recognized, and when we achieve wealth and status to enable us to advocate good works, I hope each of us remember to put our money towards doing good works that benefits our community, our cities, our states and country and our world.
Happy Friday!
Washington Memorial Funeral Home Launches new website
3PRIME’s most recent website redesign went live this morning. This was a funeral home website for Connecticut’s Washington Memorial Funeral Home, located at 4 Washington Avenue in North Haven, CT.
The new website builds on previous incarnations, preserving convenient obituaries access and adding far more information and visual aids for bereaved families seeking a location for a ceremony to honor their loved ones.
We were honored to be a part of the project and invite your comments and feedback on this web design.
Copper Kitchen to close for lack of lease committment
I’m going to miss them a lot. Back in high school, this was a regular breakfast stop and their price at the time, an audacious $2.22 for bacon, eggs, potatoes and toast, will forever be my standard by which breakfast joints and diners will be measured.
As a long time fan of Roomba, become Bespoke, I dearly hope that there is a last minute change of policy by Yale properties. How could a cheap breakfast place not be in the interests of their college audience? Have they lined up a Panera to take it’s place?
Thanks Copper Kitchen!

Social Media Tips and Links
People may have trouble justifying their work with social media purely from a traffic basis.
However, the greatest benefit, besides brand building and of course sales, is in great relevant, timely links often from a great number of sources.
With that in mind here are 3 tips to help guide your work.
- Always make sure that what you publish is a permanent URL. This means that links to your post or items within your post provide a lasting benefit.
- Use software and plugins that automatically distribute your content on the networks the provide linkbacks (twitter, digg, reddit, facebook)
- Make sure that your content provides a balance of personal and business information. It is this balance that makes your social media persona interesting and attractive!
Preparing for Hurricane Earl
We’ve been watching the hurricane season closely the last week, particularly Earl, Fiona and Gaston.
Having recently launched a website about life insurance for Hampton Roads residents, it caught our Eye that in Virginia, Gov. Bob McDonnell activated the National Guard and sent 200 troops to the Hampton Roads area on Chesapeake Bay.
We also found some basic tips from Red Cross that we thought were worth reviewing going into this potentially hectic weekend.
- Have batteries, a flashlight and a portable radio.
- Have nonperishable food that does not need cooking — canned tuna, peanut butter, canned beans and other foods that provide protein and energy. Be sure to have a non-electric can opener handy as well.
- Bottled water — one gallon per person per day — for drinking and hygiene needs.
- A sufficient supply of medications.
- A first-aid kit to treat minor injuries.
- Sufficient food, water and medication for pets.
- Perform a hazard check around your home and yard. Put away lawn furniture and other items that might blow around and cause damage.
If we think it’s going to be bad, we’ll also want to setup “safety zones” in the house where we can go while the storm is at it’s climax. One of the primary considerations, for me, is flying glass. When Hurricane Gloria came through in 1985, this is what we did to barricade ourselves in the event of debris flying through the windows.
- Choose a room where you can comfortably stay during the storm
- The room should have relatively few windows if possible
- Arrange the furniture in a circle in the middle of the room to create a barricade
- At the very least, tape the windows in the room to prevent glass from shattering and flying
- If you expect serious, strong winds, you should consider boarding over the windows
And, because we can, here’s a little classic newscast from Youtube for ya! Stay safe and dry this weekend!
