If you thought it was difficult to manage all your social network profiles, try running a profitable company while also worrying about broken HTML and server crashes.

Sometimes, a company may simply lose track of its online assets, and this is where we come in. 3-PRIME has recently helped a local insurance company take control of its online presence and develop it in important ways that will allow it to increase its rankings and customer base on the Internet. First, we tracked down the company website hosting information, as well as ftp passwords that had been lost. Next, we recovered control panel access and regained the ability to modify and update the site.

After that, we installed a number of important site management tools, starting with Google Analytics, which allowed us to keep statistics on site hits and keywords. We also installed the Wordpress engine, in order to make it easier to maintain and update the site. To get our client started, we wrote and uploaded two initial posts on the company’s new blog.

Finally, we wrote a custom PHP script to add search engine friendly links on their homepage to their blog posts. This way, each time our clients add a post on their company blog, the company homepage will be updated with links to the entry, so that visitors will be able to easily keep up to date with news and other updates.

If you’d like to see the end result, click here.

If you want to raise your company’s profile by blogging, contact us and get a personally-tailored quote for your website!

We get these fairly regularly (1 per week), and occasionally our website maintenance clients forward one to us. Who knows how much time their salespeople waste following up on fake orders, only to decide at the end that the order is fraudulent. Or worse, they ship the order only to find that the payment fails.

Review the following message and I’ll tell you how you know its a BS phishing or fake order spam in 5 seconds flat!

from	Carl Harrison <carlh32@yahoo.com>
to
bcc	submissions@3-prime.com
subject	Urgent Order
Good Day,

Hello my name is Carl and with regards to your company, well I email to know if you do have ( Portable Garages ) in-stock for sell and if you do have the ( Portable Garages ) email me back with the types, sizes and the prices on them and also do you accept credit card as a method of payment ? Waiting for your respond back.

Thank You
Carl Harrison

To Address: email isn’t sent to an appropriate person, strong signal it is spam and sent indiscriminately. In this case they BCC’d me, and I don’t even work there! If it makes no sense, don’t waste your valuable time on it!

Subject: Unspecific but related to an “Order” or “Purchase”. The fact that it doesn’t say anything about the order, why its urgent or what their timeline is all signal that the order is fake or seeking to start a scam.

Email Body: “With regards to your company” If they are ready to order, why wouldn’t they properly refer to your company?

How you know in 5 second flat that this is a fake order is that the text in the email body is being filled in by a script. In this case they encapsulated the variable values in parantheses and also failed to make the keyword blend with the text. Furthermore, the request about the product states that basically any size might do, clearly not an urgent need for anything specific.

The second way you know immediately that this is phishing related is they are offering upfront to use their credit card. Period. Real people don’t write emails like this.

If you want to look a little deeper, Google their email address: http://www.google.com/search?hl=&q=”carlh32@yahoo.com”

I choose this example as the best illustration to show that this scammer has been using the same lame script for a while now.

The tragedy in Japan has captured the attention and sympathy of the entire world, with even the country’s traditional enemy – China – sending aid. The Deputy Editor of the major Russian newspaper “Izvestiya,” however, had a different view of the events. Yelena Yampolskaya contributed to her newspaper’s ongiong commentary on the disaster by writing that while “none of us are happy to see the Japanese suffer,” the event is “obvious proof” of God’s intervention on behalf of Russia, in retaliation for unspecified Japanese offenses against her country. Yampolskaya doesn’t appear to have ever detailed the nature of Haiti’s crimes against Russia that caused the devastating 2010 earthquake in that country, which left 300,000 people dead and the nation in ruins.

Certainly, we have heard similar pronouncements Stateside on occasion, but they have generally come from people safely ensconced in small, radical churches and not in major news outlets.

To free these seats, the following companies are being asked to quietly pick up their chips and move to a less infamous table.

Office Depot Inc

New York Times Co

Eastman Kodak Co

Newspapers giving way to cable distribution, no surprise given people have shown a definite preference for entertainment-news rather than traditional journalism.

And Netflix, one of my own darlings, taking the seat from an office supply chain that, I guess, can’t match Quill and Staples.

Or is Staples not long for the S&P either…

Interesting summary from Forrester:

blogs.forrester.com/augie_ray/10-09-28-why_are_social_behaviors_plateauing

I like the categories for social network behavior they use here, particularly Creators and Joiners. It is true that with the simplification of online publication, more people than ever are saying more of what they think, or what others think, on a consistent basis.

Their messages are also read by more people and archived in myriad manners, forcing us to recognize that the traditional reality of gateways of information to not exist as they once did.

Instead the gateways to information are defined by a coupling of which networks people are involved in and to whom they “connect” themselves within those networks.

So for those not so interested in sharing or Creating, there are added the Joiners, those who setup their profiles on the networks they deem indispensable simply so they are availed of the chatter of those more prone to create.

From these grow services that help Joiners aggregate their various profiles so that they can more quickly read and digest the Created “content”.

The main problem that I’ll mention here with this paradigm is that all of these services thrive because they are essentially free. This is also a root of the trouble we have with “news”, specifically that when all content is free, facts take a distant backseat to entertaining and gripping eyeballs.

Makes you wonder what’s really out there anymore. For us here in Connecticut, today, it’s rain, baby!

Stay dry folks!

Can Small Businesses Find an Affordable Niche in Google’s Paywall Service?

Discussion started over at SEW…

Google always gives prominence first to paying customers (PPC above natural results) and second to what it deems are the most relevant results.

Let’s say that now when we produce valuable content on a client’s website, we have the opportunity to collect a fee. If a customer of Google’s paywall clicks and “accepts the charges”, supposedly we as the publisher of valuable information gain a dominant share of the fee.

This shows a great potential for businesses to invest more greatly in researching and publishing quality content. Of course it could also mean that writing a great headline could earn you the same fees rather than focus on the content behind the paywall…

Let’s look at it another way. I publish great content and offer it via RSS feed to other websites to increase my traffic. Will the paywall only be enacted if the visitor enters by Google referral?

Many questions certainly but I truly hope that Google succeeds in developing a working model for paid content. The dumbing down of literature and culture badly needs a buttress against the hammering of small opinions writ large.
