All Your Image Are Belong To Us

Has anyone seen the new Google Image search lately? I did one today and it was honestly jarring at first. I had a severe “Wait, where am I?” moment and I had to check my URL. The image description and titles are gone, unless you scroll over one, which enlarges it and makes it “pop out” from the rest of the results. Also, moving from one results page to another is seamless and I can scroll from page 1 to 20 in about ten seconds.

The new results page for image searches is really aesthetically pleasing (don’t believe me? Check out this search I did on waterfalls) and I wonder if this is a sign of things to come. What do you guys think?

ConnectiCon 2010

This past weekend I attended my first ever ConnectiCon and to be honest, I have mixed feelings about the event. In a lot of ways, it’s your typical convention. There were a lot of enthusiasts (some may call them “nerds”) dressed up as their favorite anime/comic/video game characters. There were a lot of people selling niche items, like foam swords, cat ears, Sonic the Hedgehog backpacks, “real swords” and funny T-Shirts. And then there were a bunch of fan run events like dances, Masquerades, panels and anime screenings.

But only several hours into my first day, I was complaining that there was nothing I wanted to see. I don’t read webcomics, I don’t watch nearly as much anime as I used to and if I bought a sword I’d only poke my eye out. New York Comic Con (sorry for the name drop) was the only other con I’d ever been to. And at first the only thing ConnectiCon did was make me wish I was there instead.

Names for anniversary events

Question from Aardvark this morning, first one in a while actually…

can anyone suggest some creative name for the entertainment event on the anniversary of a company?
- Janaki Manohar P. 23 / M / Lawrence, KS

Without knowing the company, audience, or year of anniversary, I think you’ll get less relevant responses.

Nonetheless:

  • Gazing with Inspired Eyes
  • Lemons from Lemonade (What we’ve done in the past year)
  • Fruits of our Labor

Google News Gets (more) Personal

Google News has long been my choice for online news aggregation, mostly because I spend hours each days starting at Google.com content but also because I found it to provide the sort of broad view that I like to see. I spend about 15 minutes per day reading headlines and perhaps 20 minutes reading actual stories and news related to my work.

Google News Gets Personal Progress BarSo this morning when I click to see top headlines, I see a slightly altered setup, a link in the top right to explain why News is different, with a capitalized “News” notably present, and this progress bar indicating, “I’m not done getting personal with you”.

I strategically avoid personalizing my news. I can confidently say that one of the greatest sources of my political Ire, is that, IMO, most Americans get their news from specific sources that tend to support, never challenge, their existing worldviews.

I’ll not be completing the proscribed process, thank you very much, and I’ll continue avoiding, wherever possible, any semblance of this practice that says “I only need to know what I think I need to know.”

What do you think?
