GeoCities: R.I.P

For those of you who haven’t heard, Yahoo! has officially shut down Geocities. And they’re just in time for Halloween in case anyone wants to go trick or treating as their dead GeoCities page. Spooky.

But why would Yahoo! just throw away something that they spent good money for, about 3.57 billion dollars in 1999. GeoCities web pages still saw around ten million visitors per month and some may think (as many did) that those kind of numbers were worth having around. At the very least they could have tried to sell the company, basically anything they made would end up being more than what they got by unceremoniously shutting it down.

Of course, they could have been trying to cannibalize GeoCities into their Yahoo! web hosting service. An offer to join the service was included with the announcement that GeoCities was closing to its users. It must have been a bitter pill to swallow: “So, yeah, we’re shutting all of this free stuff down but now you get to pay for web hosting for only 4.99 a month! We know you must be excited.”

And while 4.99 isn’t a lot for web hosting it’s still 4.99 more a month than most GeoCities users were paying. Besides, 4.99 is good for almost two gallons of gas in some places. Maybe.

Yahoo! never found a way to make GeoCities profitable or at least–profitable enough for them. And while I’m not going to say that they ran it into the ground–that’s surely where it is now.

R.I.P.

FormTracks Migration Underway

Finally purchased some new VPS space for our FormTracks service, and the migration process is well underway!

The new environment is a very robust entity to say the least - memcached, zend optimized, and fully loaded with automation up the ying-yang to make even the seasoned admin say 01000110 01110101 01100011 01101011 00100000 01011001 01100101 01100001 01101000 00100001 (gotta copy the text in to translate it…)

anyways, short post today, more tomorrow, so check in then. Tah-tah…s

Kicking Off National Vegetarian Month

The month of October is most readily identified as the beginning of Fall as well as the month of Halloween. While this is certainly deserved, there are also events/observances that are not as easily recognized. October 1st, also known as World Vegetarian Day, kicks off National Vegetarian month. Suggested in 1977 by the North American Vegetarian Society, World Vegetarian Day was endorsed by the International Vegetarian Union in 1978, and has been observed ever sense. While the entire month is National Vegetarian Month, the first of the month is when World Vegetarian Day is actually observed.

One of the biggest organizations which publicly supports this national observance is the Humane Society of the United States. The HSUS is the nation’s largest animal welfare organization, and aims to raise awareness regarding the treatment of animals, specifically farm animals. During this month, consumers are encouraged to indulge in healthy vegetarian alternatives, as opposed to their normal meals. One reason is attributed to the neglect and routine abuse which farm animals experience on a daily basis.

Farm animals are kept in tight captivity, neglected, sometimes even abused. They are forced to undergo painful procedures, some including mutilations, without any type of painkiller or anesthetic. Currently, the HSUS is providing delicious recipes for mouth-watering vegetarian treats. There are very few restaurants in today’s society where vegetarian alternatives can not be located. Whether visiting a fast-food chain or a more prestige establishment, vegetarian alternatives are plentiful in today’s society.
